Multifactor Authentication for CM/ECF

Multifactor authentication (MFA) will soon be required for CM/ECF. MFA provides an added layer of security to accounts by helping protect against cyberattacks that steal passwords, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorized access. Voluntary enrollment will begin Sunday, May 11th. Users who do not voluntarily enroll will be randomly selected to enroll starting in August. By the end of 2025, everyone with CM/ECF-level access will be required to use MFA when logging in. Users with PACER-only access are strongly encouraged to enroll in MFA but will not be required to do so.

A few important notes:

  • filers who use third-party software for filing should ensure that MFA is supported by that software before enrolling in MFA to avoid any disruption in their business processes
  • those who share their accounts will be able to add up to five authentication apps (they will be able to enroll up to 4 other users’ authentication apps in addition to their own)
